Kazakhstan plans 2GW solar project

A 2GW solar plant is set to be built in Kazakhstan (pictured) next year.

Reports claim French firm Fonroche Energie Group has signed an agreement with state-owned ZhambylGidroEnergo to build the plant.

The first phase of the project will include the installation of a 24MW plant, costing €80 million (£64.4 million) located in the south of Kazakhstan.

Yernur Dzhienbaev, Deputy Director of the company in Kazakhstan said the plant would later be expanded to 2GW, which is believed to represent 10% of the total annual electricity consumption in the country.

Construction is expected to begin in 2013.
