Two npower plants to bow out in 2013

Energy supplier npower confirmed today two of its power station will shut down in 2013 to fall in line with EU emissions laws.

The 2,000MW coal-fired Didcot A power station in Oxfordshire (pictured) and the 1,000MW oil-fired Fawley plant in Hampshire will close at the end of March 2013 under the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive.

Older power plants which are not a certain level of efficiency must close under this law by the end of December 2015 or once a set number of operational hours have been completed (20,000 hours for coal or 10,000 hours for oil.)

Volker Beckers, RWE npower’s chief executive said: “Both of these stations were built more than 40 years ago and have been the unsung heroes of our economy ever since, helping to keep the lights on and Britain working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“This is a time to reflect on the fantastic teams we have at both of these stations, who have helped to deliver over 80 years of generation for the UK.”

Fawley and Didcot A Power Stations’ open cycle gas turbines will remain operational until further notice.
