One dead in India’s anti-nuclear protest

One person was killed during an anti-nuclear protest in India yesterday.

According to reports, protestors turned violent when police tried to stop them from preventing uranium fuel to be loaded in the first of the two 1,000MW reactors.

A 44-year old fisherman was killed when police opened fire at a group of people who clashed with them while blocking the road in Tuticorin, a port city in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Activists have mentioned the Fukushima disaster in Japan last year to draw attention about the dangers of the nuclear plant in the coastal part of India.

Reports claim the protest, which lasted two days, resorted to police using batons and teargas shells to disperse more than 2,000 protestors who fought back by throwing stones and logs.

Last year India announced the discovery of a huge supply of uranium, which according to a survey found the site could provide up to 150,000 tonnes of uranium.
