Government’s claim to be the greenest is an “empty boast”

The claim to be the greenest Government ever looks like an “increasingly empty boast”, according to WWF.

Their comments come as a report by the Committee on Climate Change showed concerns about the UK's challenge to meet its carbon targets.

Keith Allott, Head of Climate Change at WWF-UK said the Government risks letting the Climate Change Act “wither by neglect”. The Climate Change Act is a long-term framework that helps tackle the dangers of climate change. It creates a new approach to managing and responding to climate change in the UK.

He said: “Around the world more and more countries, including Mexico, Denmark and Australia, are following the UK’s lead and passing climate change laws. Yet at precisely the same time, the UK Government risks allowing this landmark legislation to wither by neglect.

“Without urgent attention – and a much clearer commitment from the Prime Minister down - the claim to be the greenest government ever is looking like an increasingly empty boast.”

The Committee on Climate Change reported a dramatic step is needed on energy efficiency and renewable energy.
