Siemens unveils ‘superblade’ for new offshore project

Siemens claims it has produced the world's longest turbine blade for its second prototype of its 6MW offshore machine.

The German company says it is the largest glass-fibre component cast in one piece.

The 75 metre long B75 Quantam blade has a weight reduction of 25-50% compared to an identical blade made using “traditional technology.” This is due to its “unique airfoils”, which the company says offers great strength at a wide range of wind speed.

It also claims blades produced in one piece without glue joints makes them extremely robust, which significantly improves the cost efficiency of wind turbines.

The blades will be installed in the Osterild Test Station in Denmark later this year.
