O2 reveals carbon footprint

Mobile operator O2 has become the first network to certify its carbon footprint with low carbon professionals, the Carbon Trust.

O2 calculated the greenhouse gas emissions embedded throughout the entire lifecycle of its voice and data services using the Carbon Trust’s ‘Footprint Expert’ tool.

Analysis from more than 12,000 O2 sites revealed that the carbon footprint of making a one minute voice call made on the O2 network is 3.6g CO2e and transferring one megabyte of data is 11g CO2e.

A consumer survey by the Carbon Trust suggested there are commercial and reputational opportunities available for companies, as they claim 56% of UK consumers would be more loyal to brands that can show evidence of action on carbon.

Darran Messem, Managing Director of Certification at the Carbon Trust said: “We congratulate O2 for becoming the first mobile network to have telecommunication service carbon footprints independently verified by the Carbon Trust.”
