Oxford becomes the “electric car” hub of Europe

Oxford, known as a city of bicycles, could soon become Europe’s hub for electric cars. That’s after a network with the most amount of charging points in one area in Europe was launched there today.

Chargemaster Plc, a supplier of electric vehicle (EV) charging points, launched its POLAR network with an initial 64 charging points across the city. Oxford will now have more EV charging points than petrol stations thanks to support from the public and county councils, said Chargemaster. It also claims its network will be able to charge cars twice as fast as standard chargers.

John Tanner, an Oxford Councillor said: "This fantastic investment in Oxford's low-carbon future brings electric cars within reach for jobs and the environment."

The supplier has also signed a contract with Hertz on Demand, a car rental company, for an electric car sharing club in Oxford so that people can rent the cars online.
