Energy Secretary wants more collective energy buying

The UK Energy Secretary today declared he wants more people to club together on energy buying.

Ed Davey’s comments came as hailed the “fantastic outcome” of the Big Switch, a group energy buying scheme which it is claimed could save its members a total of £25 million on bills.

More than 280,000 people signed up to the UK’s first nationwide collective switch, which was launched by Which? and 38 Degrees in February.

Today they revealed Co-operative Energy will offer 30,000 of these customers a cheaper deal on their energy. Others in the scheme will be offered the next best deal from EDF Energy.

The Energy Secretary said: “This is a fantastic outcome for the Big Switch. As a longstanding proponent of collective purchasing, I am really pleased to see the concept being made a reality in the UK and on such a scale. It’s a very encouraging outcome for collective switching in the UK energy market.”

Mr Davey said he now wants to see more schemes helping consumers to club together on bills.
