E.ON chooses partner for smart meter roll out

Big Six firm E.ON has selected control and monitoring company Elster to partner with for the first phase of its smart metering rollout. E.ON will install up to 100,000 Elster smart meters in residential properties by the end of 2012, with up to 200,000 more being installed in 2013 in a two-year contract.

E.ON has so far installed over 100,000 smart meters across the country. Don Leiper, director of new business at E.ON said: "Our customers want Smart Meters and those who now have them are extremely pleased with the technology, in terms of putting them in control of their energy use and bringing an end to estimated bills."

DECC has set out a strategy for the installation of 53 million smart meters in 30 million homes and businesses across the UK. The mass roll-out is expected to start in 2014 and to be completed in 2019.

Smart meters will give consumers real time information on their energy consumption, which Government hope will help manage energy use better, save money, therefore reducing emissions. Smart meters could also bring an end to estimated billing.
