Exceedingly good efficiency is a piece of cake

Cutting energy use in industrial processes is a piece of cake if you automate. That's according to Britain's largest food producer Premier Foods.

The makers of teatime favourite Mr Kipling's cakes says it cut costs by making its Stoke factory more efficient.

At the Automated Britain conference today in London, Premier Foods' supply chain director Bob Spooner spoke about the savings made from streamlining factory processes.

He told ELN: "We found that the energy consumption in the factory has gone down as we've automated more of the processes.

"What we've done with our automation programme is consolidated a number of processes onto one line so you're running less lines that use less energy.

"The investment that we've made is in technology that's much more energy efficient."
