China announces major energy consumption cuts

China plans to cut its industrial energy consumption by 21%. The country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said today it "is expected to save the equivalent of 670 million tonnes of coal" during the next five years.

According to the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the plan sets out detailed cuts to energy-intensive sectors. The steel, non-ferrous, petrochemical and electronics industries are required to reduce their energy use per unit of value-added output by 18% from 2010 levels, with some other sectors bringing in bigger cuts.

In a statement the Chinese Government said the measures were being introduced to "promote energy savings and emission reductions and to ease its increasing thirst for energy".
