Charity calls for water metering

Putting a metered price on water is essential if people are expected to value water. These were the words of The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management who are calling for tougher measures from government in the way that we deal with our water issues.

The 'Water White Paper', launched yesterday, endorses reducing the impact of our water use on the environment as well as the pressures of an increasing population. However CIWEM has questioned how we might recognise consumption and waste of water if an appropriate value is not determined.

Nick Reeves, CIWEM's Executive Director said: "Broadly this is a positive document. But central to this is that we value our water properly and in order to do this we need to measure water use accurately and then utilise tariffs that discourage profligacy and support those who generally struggle to afford their water. This White Paper does too little to encourage wider metering which is a crucial part of this balance."
