Government slammed for faltering on green incentives

The UK government isn't helping microgeneration enough, according to the industry's representative body. Grace Bennet, Head of Policy at Micropower Policy has said that renewable technologies included in microgeneration, such as small scale wind and solar, are being let down by those in Whitehall through basic legislation failings.

Speaking at the Energy Solutions Expo in London today, Miss Bennet said: "The Renewable Heat Incentive needs more focus for its carbon reduction quality. The UK Government isn't helping microgeneration enough - the 'golden rule' does not apply to solid wall insulation, for instance. We want to see microgeneration on green deal finance."

This golden rule of the Green Deal financing scheme will keep monthly repayments from the scheme at less than, or at least equal to, the energy savings property owners should claw back from efficiency improvements.

Miss Bennet said the UK would struggle to hit its legally binding targets without extra support for microgeneration. The Climate Change Act requires an 80% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and a reduction in emissions of at least 34% by 2020 (against a 1990 baseline).

The Micropower Council represents companies and organisations active in the microgeneration sector and campaigns on behalf of its members for a genuine mass market for small scale, low and zero carbon electricity and heat generating technologies.
