Firefighters are still on standby after a fire broke out at Shell's Singapore refinery. The blaze began at Pulau Bukom site, more than 5km away from the mainland, on Wednesday. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) worked with Shell to extinguish it by late afternoon yesterday.
Six firefighters received medical attention but have now returned to their normal duties, said the oil giant. All Shell's staff have been accounted for and non essential staff have been evacuated to safety. Nearby units at the refinery were shut down as a precaution.
Shell said in its latest statement today: "Efforts are now in place to further secure the site of the fire to allow investigations to commence safely. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the SCDF for their tireless efforts in working closely with Shell in containing the fire."
