Adapt to climate change, Brits encouraged

British businesses are being encouraged to prepare for future climate change by government advisors. From 1 October, front-line sector bodies like hospitals and local government will be able to get advice on issues related to climate change like flooding, drought and heatwaves.

The Environment Agency is launching the new programme, called the Adapting to Climate Change Programme, as part of its new role as advisor to government and the public sector.

Speaking at the programme's launch on Tuesday, Environment Minister Lord Henley said: "Climate change will have a significant impact on our economy in the future, bringing both risks and new opportunities for growth. Businesses will now be able to tap into a wealth of knowledge and expertise from the Environment Agency about what climate change could mean for them, and will give them a great advantage in meeting the challenges ahead."

The programme will include an online information service as well as a more specific 'support service' for sectors that will deal with the issues first-hand, such as businesses in the built environment, infrastructure and environment sectors.
