Charge cars for free on the motorway

Charge cars for free on the motorway

Motorway service stations will soon be host to an "electric highway" with the opening of a network of electric car charging points. Welcome Break is installing electric vehicle (EV) points at its 27 service stations.Every post will be powered with 100% green energy made at Ecotricity's wind and solar parks across the UK.

Rod McKie, CEO of Welcome Break said: "There is no doubt that the electric car will arrive on Britain's motorways," adding that "fast-charge" facilities will let electric car drivers travel the length and breadth of the UK.

Dale Vince OBE, founder of Ecotricity said it was cheaper per mile to drive EVs: "With world oil prices going through the roof, you'll now be able to get around Britain using only the power of the wind. It costs 1p a mile in an electric vehicle, compared with 10p in a petrol car (at today's oil prices)."

Accessed by free swipecards, the recharge points will be able to 'top up' cars in 20 minutes or fully charge them in 2 hours, while some will offer slower charging for overnight visitors to service station hotels.
