Big Six welcome increased competition

Big Six energy providers SSE, EDF and Npower have welcomed the announcement by Energy Secretary Chris Huhne that he'll be holding a meeting with smaller energy producers, in order to discover ways in which to encourage wider participation in the marketplace.

SSE welcomed increased competition in the market, which EDF said would be good for customers: "We have worked constructively with Ofgem to address the issues it has raised and help ensure the market works even more effectively for consumers. EDF Energy remains committed to working constructively with the regulator in order to strengthen public confidence in the energy market."

Mr Huhne has arranged a summit meeting with several small energy suppliers including Ovo Energy, First Utility, Ecotricity, Co-op Energy and Good Energy to assess what help they need to break the dominance of the Big Six .

Juliet Davenport, founder and CEO of 100% renewable electricity supplier, Good Energy, said: "I'm looking forward to speaking to Chris Huhne about how renewable energy can help to keep consumers' energy bills down. While all other energy suppliers have raised their standard tariffs in recent months, Good Energy has been able to maintain a price freeze throughout the winter and spring."
