Businesses champion Energy Certificate amendment

Tory MP Zac Goldsmith has tabled a clause for the amendment of the Energy Bill, which would see all commercial buildings require Display Energy Certificates.

Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council said he had the backing of UK business:
"Zac Goldsmith has hit the nail on the head with this proposal. There is widespread business support for the extension of DECs to commercial buildings because they help companies save money on energy bills and they provide a level playing field for comparing the market."

Display Energy Certificates were introduced by the British Government in response to the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive which all EU member states must follow. DECs are meant to promote the improvement of the energy performance of buildings.

Currently only public buildings are required to display the A-G ratings for energy performance.

Mr King said: "This is an ideal opportunity for Government to fulfil the commitment it gave as recently as March."
