Efficient motors can cut global demand by 10%

Using energy efficient electric motors could cut global electricity demand by 10%, claims a new report.

According to the International Energy Agency, electric motors in the home as well as in transport, farming and industry make up 43-46% of all global electricity consumption, double that of lighting (at 19%). In total these motors produce about 6,000 Megatonnes (Mt) of CO2 emissions.

This could be cut by 10% by 2030 with a switch to properly sized, energy efficient motors and using adjustable-speed drive. Just by using the best available motors on the market, about 4-5% of all electric motor energy consumption can be saved, researchers suggested.

The report, called Energy Efficiency Policy Opportunities for Electric Motor Driven Systems, was issued by the IEA to advise governments on the benefits of motor efficiency.
