Anti-EDF protest brings London to a halt

Anti-nuclear campaign group, 'Boycott EDF Energy' set up camp outside energy firm EDF's London offices, and flew a flag that read: "nuclear disaster area".

Reports by members of the public say that rush hour traffic was brought to a standstill. The protests are allegedly over plans the energy giants have to build a new generation of UK nuclear power plants.

EDF UK released a statement earlier that insisted the protestors were part of a minority: "We believe strongly that low-carbon nuclear has a vital role in maintaining UK electricity supplies in the future. That view is backed by Government and industry and a large proportion of the public."

Over 3,000 people marched on EDF's oldest nuclear plant at Fessenheim in France yesterday to demand its shutdown.
