Vestas are hoping to to take offshore wind to the "next level" with a new turbine.
The wind firm will team up with DONG Energy to develop the next-generation offshore wind turbine with a blade diameter of 164m, wider than the London Eye.
The two companies announced plans to test the new V164-7.0 MW design in a letter of intent today.
Designed specifically for the harsh conditions in northern European waters, the turbine will be seven metres taller than the Gherkin, at a tip height of 187m.
The turbines could potentially be installed at one of DONG Energy's test sites for research and demonstration purposes.
