Networks "vital" to DECC’s new smart meter plans

Charles Hendry has been praised for his attitude to the role of networks in new plans for a smart metering.

Yesterday DECC announced their strategy for the national rollout of smart meters, which the Energy Networks Association has welcomed.

David Smith, Chief Executive of ENA said: "The networks have a vital role to play in delivering a secure, sustainable and affordable energy for the UK and we are pleased the Energy Minister, Charles Hendry, recognises the intrinsic link between smart meters and smart grids."

Widespread use of smart metering would be crucial in improving service to consumers. he added: "The data from smart meters will be essential to support the development of smart grids.

"Through better informed consumers and improved monitoring or network performance achieved, our members will be able to manage the demand and supply of energy in a more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable way."

DECC plans a mass rollout for smart metering to begin from 2014, with appliances in most UK homes and businesses by 2019.
