Lights out across London for Earth Hour

Dozens of London landmarks will switch off their lights tomorrow to mark Earth Hour, along with thousands of businesses nationally and worldwide.

Big Ben, Wembley, EDF Energy's London Eye and the Millennium Bridge are just a few of the tourist destinations that will cut their lights for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 26 March.

Earth Hour's organiser, WWF, hopes it will send a strong message to the Government about reducing the impact of our energy system on the environment.

WWF has called on the Prime Minister to commit to an electricity sector that is ten times cleaner by 2030, to outlaw the dirtiest and most polluting power stations, and make sure the Green Deal improves energy efficiency in UK homes.

David Cameron spoke out in support of the event. He told the WWF: "At the heart of this initiative is one simple, profound idea. Sharing responsibility holds the key to fighting climate change. Yes, of course, international co-operation and government action have vital roles to play, that's why when we say we want this to be the greenest government ever, we mean it."

No. 10 Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament are taking part in Earth Hour.
