Green project shows Scottish opportunity

A project that showcases the potential of renewable energy and low carbon technologies was opened yesterday by Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond.

The Hydrogen Office was set up to support the development of renewable and green industries in Scotland. The project aims to display the potential of energy storage for times when renewable energy may be offline. It also aims to demonstrate the role that energy efficiency, renewables and hydrogen can play in reducing the future impact of climate change and energy security of supply concerns through reliable, clean and quiet energy sources.

The buildingis powered by a renewable, hydrogen energy system. The renewable power is used when available and also stored as hydrogen when there is a surplus. The Hydrogen Office energy system comprises of a 750kW wind turbine, 30kw electrolyser, 10kW hydrogen fuel fell and a geothermal source heat pump.
