npower adopts new smart grid system

npower has joined forces with Flexitricity in order to bring the benefits of the company's smart grid system to customers through the launch of their new SmartSTOR product. Flexitricity partners with businesses to provide reserve electricity to the National Grid.

The new product turns things like standby generators into sources of revenue as the Grid pays businesses to make reserve power available on standby. Flexitricity claim their smart grid, the first in the UK, could earn medium sized businesses more than £100,000 per year.

David Cockshott, director of industrial and commercial markets at npower, said: "it really is win-win for customers, providing them with opportunities to earn extra money and increase asset reliability, while reducing carbon emissions and risk in the national electricity system. In fact, it's estimated that SmartSTOR will generate up to £15 million gross revenue for our customers and save between 90,000 and 225,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum."

npower claim businesses will also be helping the UK meet its emission targets, as using power from their assets will mean the grid will be able to lose reserve power stations. The Short Term Operating Reserve (STOR) acts as a way of providing additional power during times of high peaks by reducing demand.
