British Gas wraps up £4m insulation acquisition

According to British Gas research, £1 in every £4 spent on domestic energy is wasted because of poor insulation.

The company also predicts spending on home insulation will rise from around £0.6bn a year in 2010 to £1.4bn in 2015.

In the next couple of years, British Gas expects to employ over a thousand staff to carry out insulation. With this in mind, it has this week bought insulation firm ECL Contracts for £4m.

Rugby-based ECL specialises in solid-wall insulation, which British Gas has not had previous expertise in. There are an estimated 9m homes in the UK of solid-wall construction.

Jon Kimber, managing director of British Gas New Energy, said: "At British Gas, we are building the country's leading insulation business, reducing household carbon emissions, and helping our customers lower their energy bills. The insulation market is growing, and insulating homes is the cheapest way to reduce energy bills."

The focus on insulation marks a further expansion of the British Gas business portfolio. A company spokesperson said: "We have been focussed on quick wins before. Energy companies need to go beyond electricity and gas and save customers money."
