Portland Harbour has played host to an event to showcase how important ports will be in the new greener world. More than 80 delegates gathered in Dorset to highlight how ports will be the gateway for renewable technologies to take off in the UK.

Eneco, head developers of the offshore wind park a few miles off Portland's coast, spoke to the various companies involved in renewable energy construction about the strengths the port can bring to the supply chain.

Ian McQuade, Head of Commercial Department for Portland Port Ltd, said: "Clearly we see that there is a major strategic opportunity in the offshore renewables sector, and our vision is for the port to be at the heart of future development. Our location gives us the perfect position to fulfill our vision of making Portland the key hub for offshore renewables in Southern England."

The development of the offshore wind park on the south coast has started to show the vast resource of the wind power the UK potentially has, as developers have started to move away from the original North Sea areas. The government has already said it will give £60m to ports to help them make the transition into wind energy hubs.

Richard Parkinson, Director of Mojo Maritime Ltd, said: "I think Portland is an ideal facility for this kind of activity - the exciting thing is it's one of the few places in the UK to have plans in place to deliver the kind of space developers will need."
