Wirral pier could incorporate tidal project

A new pier in the Wirral could be used to test tidal power technology on the Mersey.

Peel Energy has been looking at the possibility of generating energy from tidal power in the Mersey and will today make a presentation to Wirral Council on how the project is developing.

Peel intends to make a formal planning application in 2012. If successful, the tidal power scheme has the potential to generate electricity for up to 260,000 homes.

Peel Energy is part of the Peel Group, which owns the port of Liverpool. Last week ELN reported how the port's Alexandra Dock has been chosen as the location for a £300m biomass facility to recycle waste wood.

Last week the head of Peel Group, John Whittaker, topped a poll of the 50 most influential northerners in the UK. As well as Liverpool port, Peel owns the Traffod Centre and John Lennon Airport.
