BAE helps create wave power converter

BAE helps create wave power converter

One of the companies that got a slice of a £7m windfall to finance tidal development has teamed up with defence giant BAE Systems to create a wave power device.

Aquamarine Power won a £450,000 grant from the government's Technology Strategy Board to support a 30-month research and development scheme to try to make its Oyster cost-effective.

BAE will develop remote ballasting and problem-solving systems for the Oyster, which uses a floating hinged flap to pump water through a hydro-electric turbine to generate electricity for the National Grid.

BAE's engineering director of its surface ships division said: "This is a great opportunity for us to apply skills developed in naval design and the management of large, complex maritime engineering programmes to support the emerging marine energy industry," said Kevin McLeod, engineering director at BAE's surface ships division.
