Royal Mail pushes envelope with solar and heating designs

The Royal Mail's head of sustainability believes that the government target of 50% of carbon cuts by 2015 might be difficult to achieve, but he is certain that 40% can be hit.

Martin Blake was speaking at the CRC Energy Efficiency Summit in London this week.

"CRC is something that we would gladly apply because we always want to reduce the carbon, as it is so costly," he said, adding that saving carbon was the same as saving money: "It is not about the carbon, but also about the business".

Blake said that Royal Mail has drawn up blueprints for new low carbon depots using solar panels and sustainable heating.
