Former energy minister chairs National Grid initiative

Former Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks MP is the new chairman of Affordable Warmth Solutions, a National Grid initiative to tackle fuel poverty.

The independent community interest company was set up by National Grid to leverage funding and expertise in providing affordable gas heating systems and new gas connections.

Affordable Warmth Solutions brings together funding partners and energy firms to provide an effective delivery model which can also be used by independent gas transporters and other infrastructure connection providers.

During its first year of operations, it delivered 11 community projects, involving the construction of 2,800m of gas mains and 530 individual gas services. These projects also involved replacing around 500 old heating systems with new gas systems.

Mr Wicks, Labour's MP for Croydon North, said: "Increasing energy efficiency while reducing people's fuel bills is good not just for those who may be struggling, but for society as a whole."
