Friends of the Earth urge 42% emissions cut

Friends of the Earth have said that David Cameron's government must aim for at least a 42% cut in emissions in the UK by 2020.

Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins said the new government needed to set "a more ambitious target for tackling climate change".

He said the 42% figure was the minimum that scientific experts claim is needed for the UK to play its fair part in preventing dangerous climate change.

Mr Atkins added: "To deliver these cuts, we also need local carbon budgets to ensure that councils play their part in cutting emissions and a new law to cut greenhouse gases caused by the UK's dependence on imported feeds for meat and dairy."
