Centrica commits to net zero by 2045

Energy and services provider Centrica has committed to becoming net zero by 2045, five years earlier than its previous deadline.

Centrica is also looking to help its customers on their net zero journey, with the heating of homes and businesses being the largest contributor to carbon emissions in the UK.

The company will begin trialling a hybrid heat pump for its customers in the coming months, as well as accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). It has set a target to install 23,000 EV charging points across its customer base throughout 2021.

The announcement follows the company making the largest electric vehicle order in the UK to date last week.

Scott Wheway, Chairman, said: "Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges facing society today and the energy sector is at the forefront of the need to respond.

“Our new and accelerated climate goals, which are in line with science, underpin the clear role and responsibility Centrica has in supporting customers on their journey to be net zero, and in decarbonising the energy system and our business."
