Shell has joined the Carbon Trust's Offshore Wind Accelerator.
The oil and gas giant has joined the collaborative programme to help further research and development into offshore wind energy and reduce the costs associated with the renewable energy resource.
The consortium, which currently includes firms such as E.ON, Innogy, Ørsted and Vattenfall, said the move is a sign of the energy company's commitment to the low carbon transition.
Shell is also part of a group developing the Borssele III and IV offshore wind projects in the Dutch North Sea, which have a combined capacity of 731.5MW.
It intends to invest up to $2 billion (£1.5bn) per year into the field of 'new energies' by 2020.
Dorine Bosman, Vice President of Wind Development at Shell, said: "The Carbon Trust’s Offshore Wind Accelerator is a good example of the collaboration required between public and private sectors.
"The research and development programme will be key to delivering technical, commercial and financial innovations for large scale and sustainable offshore wind opportunities in the future."
