Canary Wharf trials plastic straw phase-out

Canary Wharf has joined the fight against single-use plastic straws.

It has asked all restaurants, bars and coffee shops on its estate to stop serving plastic straws for a three-week trial period.

Bars and restaurants including All Bar One, Wagamama and Pret A Manger have been highlighted as examples to inspire other retailers to get on board with the scheme, after having already phased out non-sustainable cutlery and other items.

Following the three-week trial, Canary Wharf will advise retailers on alternative green solutions, such as paper or biodegradable plastic, as well as ask all retail tenants to join the commitment to banning traditional straws permanently.

Steve Greig, Co-Managing Director at Canary Wharf said: "We are grateful to our tenants for joining us in our attempt to break consumer habits once and for all and look forward to working together to eliminate straws across the estate as part of our battle against single-use plastic."

The European Commission has proposed banning plastic straws, cutlery and cotton buds under new plans to crackdown on marine litter.
