Tesco sticks 13% carbon savings in its basket

Tesco has slashed its carbon dioxide emissions by 13% last year, compared to 2016.

The supermarket giant's latest annual report shows its carbon footprint totalled 3.4 million tonnes of the greenhouse gas over the last financial year, more than a quarter down on 2015.

These reductions mean the retailer is currently on course to meet its goal of reducing emissions by 35% before 2020, as outlined in the science-based targets it set last year.

The firm is working towards becoming a zero-carbon business by 2050 and sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 - it currently gets 55% of its energy from clean technologies such as wind and solar.

Tesco also achieved strong growth over the period, having brought in £51 billion in sales in the past year.

Lindsey Pownall, Tesco’s Corporate Responsibility Committee Chair, said: "It is recognised that we need to work together across society to build a truly sustainable future and the business fully supports global efforts to build this future, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris climate agreement.

"The new targets ensure that our supply chain and operations support the agreement to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C this century, as well as our long-term ambition to become a zero-carbon business."
