Cardiff ‘to save £750,000 with LED lighting’

Wales has installed 14,000 energy efficient LED streetlights and a smart management system in its capital city.

The project in Cardiff is the 1,000th of its kind delivered by Philips Lighting and is expected to significantly reduce the city’s carbon footprint, maximise operational efficiencies and improve the safety of citizens.

The system is expected to reduce electricity used for lighting by 60%, with savings estimated to total more than £750,000 per year.

The network of street lights, which are monitored and controlled remotely, can be dimmed on quiet roads or made brighter near busy crossings, outside partially-sighted peoples' homes or to help emergency services.

The lights can be fitted with additional sensors and equipment in the future to provide additional smart services, such as measuring pollution or traffic levels.

The new lights also save time and money by sending real-time alerts if anything needs fixing, instead of night crews having to drive around looking for faulty lights.
