New alliance to drive faster climate action on transport

A new alliance to push for faster climate action on transport has been launched.

Members of the Transport Decarbonisation Alliance, which was announced at the UN COP23 conference, will also strive to bring greater co-ordination between national, local and corporate action.

It has been initiated by France, Portugal, the Netherlands and Costa Rica.

According to the UN, transport contributes around one quarter of all energy-related and 15% to 17% of the entire spread of human CO2 emissions.

It suggests under a business-as-usual scenario, transport-related carbon emission could grow from six to seven giagatonnes to 16 to 18 gigatonnes by 2050.

José Gomes Mendes, Portugal’s Vice Transport Minister said: “More ambitious and co-ordinated action on transport is required to deliver on the Paris Agreement.”
