Nemo swims ahead for UK-Belgium power link

The first UK part of the subsea interconnector linking it to Belgium is being installed.

Nemo Link, the joint venture between Elia and National Grid, has started laying the first 59km of double subsea cable between the UK onshore landing point and the offshore section.

The 140-kilometre Nemo cable will provide enough capacity to power 500,000 homes and increase the amount of capacity available through interconnectors by 25%.

The cable was successfully pulled in at the beach of Pegwell Bay in Kent – the remaining 71km of double subsea cable will be installed in Belgium territorial waters during spring 2018.

The 1GW electricity interconnector is scheduled to start operation in early 2019.
