Ofgem proposes changes to Fuel Poor Network Extension Scheme
Ofgem is proposing to remove the eligibility criteria for the Fuel Poor Network Extension Scheme (FPNES).
The initiative helps households that are not connected to the gas grid to switch to natural gas by offering funding towards the cost of connecting to the network.
The regulator is proposing to remove the FPNES eligibility criteria that the household must “reside within the 25% most deprived areas, as measured by the government’s Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)”.
It aims to ensure the scheme reaches those who need it most and provides value for money and intends to remove it from 1st April 2018.
Geoff Randall, Associate Partner, RIIO Gas Networks, Networks Division said: “Although we recognise that this change may present challenges to the Gas Distribution Network companies (GDNs), as they need to adapt their method of engagement to identify those eligible for a connection, we consider this presents a good opportunity to demonstrate proactive and effective engagement.”
Since 2013, Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) have connected more than 52,000 households to the gas grid.
The consultation is open until 2nd November 2017.
