Scotland to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2032

The Scottish Government has said it will take action to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles by 2032.

The move comes as part of a wider set of priorities for the next year to ensure the country is "seizing the opportunities of the low carbon revolution".

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said tackling climate change was a moral obligation.

Measures to do this include accelerating the development of a charging network across the country, storing carbon in the North Sea and introducing a deposit return and recycling scheme for drinks containers.

Scotland will also introduce new energy efficiency standards for the private rented sector to help lower fuel bills and establish a Scottish National Investment Bank to deliver financial support for innovative industries including the low carbon sector.

Additionally, the government voiced determination to improve public health by slashing air pollution in its cities and towns.
