Flexible solar panels get ready to roll out

A Swiss solar firm has developed a thin, lightweight and rollable photovoltaic panel.

Flisom's new technology offers a 20 times higher power to weight ratio than standard silicon solar panels and can achieve world record conversion efficiencies of 20.4% in a Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) cell.

The company, headquartered in Zurich, has spent over a decade developing the super thin (under 2mm) film modules, which can weigh less than 500g/m2.

These products are based on the technology developed by Flisom's research partner Empa.

The firm also offers customised panel set-ups to suit the specific applications of business customers and says it is planning full commercialisation for later this year.

It aims to not only provide solar panels for buildings but also for mobility and transport and other niche applications across Europe, the UK and US.

The UK’s fleet of solar panels generated a record amount of power last week.
